Phoenix Central Park is proud to present the full-length documentation of The Risk Of Hyperbole, the debut interdisciplinary performance work by composer/director Jack Prest. This was filmed during the premiere season of the work at Phoenix Central Park in late 2021.
Created in collaboration with dancer/choreographer Azzam Mohamed and visual artists Joe Wilson and Chanelle Collier, Hyperbole is at once a music recital, dance performance and art exhibition. These traditional modes of presentation are woven together by Prest into a singular sensory journey.
Wilson and Collier present a series of artworks emblazoned with hand printed symbols that celebrate sound, object and movement. These artworks are installed live on-stage in an alternate form of set building that transforms process into performance. This literally sets the stage for Mohamed who brings the excitement of street dance and the dynamics of freestyle into a contemporary choreographic context.

An immersive multi-sensory experience, Sound Touch bypassed the brain and penetrated the skin — a bodily listening experience that was equal parts meditative and ritualistic, exploring music's potential to dig deeper than just your mind. Damien Ricketson composed Sound Touch for solo percussion and electronics, featuring a plethora of instruments, both familiar and bespoke, including 'biosonic' tuning forks, sound cannons, a vibrating plank and luminescent drums.
Premiering in our Season V program at Phoenix Central Park, Sound Touch left audiences in a state of catharsis. Ricketson's composition was brought to life by performer Niki Johnson and director Sally Blackwood, augmented by precise sound design from Ben Carey and dazzling lighting by Fausto Brusamolino. Captured in full by Jeremy Elphick, allow Sound Touch to play upon your nervous system like an Aeolian harp — each string plucked gently into resonance by distant touch.
Sound Touch has been made with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts and the University of Sydney.

Rhythm City explores everyday sounds by bringing together a collection of short, specially-prepared video clips which are looped and developed in real time. The clips themselves centre on rather mundane and commonplace actions and happenings, the idea being that by framing and isolating these scenes rhythms begin to emerge giving rise to a surprising form of music all while time seemingly stands still for the observer. All of this is wrapped up in a type of video-game environment which is controlled by the performer; the pianist plays and manipulates the videos on a midi keyboard while responding to them in the piano part which involves musical ideas inspired by or directly transcribed from the clips.

A graduate from the University of Sydney, Gary Daley studied composition with Peter Sculthorpe as well as Roger Frampton. Gary is a member of the jazz band Greening from Ear to Ear and the jazz-world music band The Catholics. He also leads the quartet Bungarribee which features his compositions and interpretations from the classical repertoire and performs on the ABC TV children show Lah Lah’s Adventures. As Artistic Director of Springwood’s (Blue Mountains) Live at the Village, Daley presents a concert series where locals can hear anything from jazz, country, world music, to free improvisation.

Piano virtuoso Mark Isaacs is a major exponent of both the classical and jazz styles. As a classical pianist, Isaacs has conducted many orchestras and as a classical concert hall composer he has composed more than 100 major works, many commissioned by some of Australia’s most prestigious ensembles, orchestras and soloists and ranging across orchestral, chamber, choral, solo pieces as well as scores for film, television and the theatre.
As a jazz pianist Isaacs has toured extensively throughout Europe, Russia, Asia, the USA, Australasia and the Pacific performing at major festivals including the Tokyo Jazz Festival and Pori Jazz, Finland. He has collaborated with some of the most distinguished figures in international jazz including Roy Haynes, Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Adam Nussbaum, Vinnie Colaiuta, Bob Sheppard and Jay Anderson and he has released numerous internationally-acclaimed albums on labels such as Naxos, ABC, Soundbrush, Vorticity and his own label Gracemusic.

In honour of the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven, Hayden and Francis perform the first narrative song-cycle where the distance from the poet's beloved is great and his longing intense. He is no longer satisfied with merely the sound of his lover's name, but frustrated by the pain that physical separation by mountains and plains causes.
Hayden and Francis end the recital with three theatre songs by American composer Ben Moore, written as one-off pieces added to different stage shows he was working on.

Voted as ‘Best Newcomer’ in the Limelight magazine awards (2011), multi-genre guitarist Dr Zane Banks is a graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. A virtuoso of both electric and classical guitar, Zane is very active in the contemporary music scene and he has performed at the ISCM World New Music Days (Sydney), the Melbourne International Arts Festival, the ABC’s Classic FM’s New Music Up Late program (featured artist). In 2011, he performed on electric guitar with Ensemble Offspring, Orchestra Victoria and The Australian Ballet Company. He is the founder and Artistic Director of Ensemble Ampere (electric guitar ensemble), co writer/co-founder of Mary Bokey & The Blind Hearts as well also being one of the founding members/composers of country rock bands The Vandemonians and The Morrisons.

At the turn of the 19th century, Czech-born composer Wenzel Thomas Matiegka (1773 –1830) moved to the economically and culturally thriving city of Vienna. As a major exponent of both the piano and the guitar, Matiegka was a highly sought after teacher within the amateur musical circles. His Nocturne Op. 21 was printed in 1807, and interestingly, the then 17 year old Franz Schubert arranged this work with an additional cello part.

Described by the press as a ‘sorceress of percussion’ percussion virtuoso Claire Edwardes has been a recipient of the prestigious Australia Council Music Fellowship, a three-time recipient of the APRA Art Music Award for Excellence by an Individual (2016, 2012, 2007) and winner of the Symphony Australia Young Performers Award (1999). As a muse for many composers including Nicole Lizeè, Matthew Shlomowitz, Ella Macens, Christopher Fox, Andrew Ford, Kate Moore, Clare Strong and Elena Kats-Chernin , Claire plays a significant role in extending the musical canon for percussion.

As a leading specialist in early flutes, Mellissa is a highly sought after musician and is Principal flute with the Sydney-based Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, a core member of the Australian Haydn Ensemble, and the founding member of the Notos Wind Quintet, Australia's premier historical woodwind quintet. Melissa also performs and records regularly with Pinchgut Opera, Ironwood, Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), Latitude 37, The Marais Project, The Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra, Luduvico’s Band and Sinfonia Australis. Emerging international concert pianist Vatche Jambazian made his Debut at the age of 16 in Yerevan, Armenia performing in a televised recital as part of the Independence Day celebrations. Vatche is prizewinner in the Los Angeles International Piano Competition and the Australian National Piano Award. In 2008 Vatche was awarded the Fine Music Station Young Performer of the Year and was a finalist in the 2015 Symphony Australia Young Performer of The Year. A graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Vatche completed his Master’s at The Juilliard School and is currently undertaking his Doctorate in Musical Arts at the Manhattan School of Music.

Lift... is a very intimate song about looking deep within and realising you haven’t been ‘feeding’ your inner self so as to blossom into the person you were meant to be in this world.
Stay... is a very personal and heart wrenching song that deals with loss, longing and helplessness.
Lullay my Heart... I wrote this song two years ago after losing my father Rory O'Donoghue. It's about forgiveness and understanding, letting go and acceptance.

Murilo Tanouye | Classical Guitar
Brazilian born Sydney based Murilo Tanouye began his musical career learning Bossa Nova and classical guitar from Renato Candro, a self-taught musician that showed him the guitar style of Brazilian legends such as Baden Powell, Joao Gilberto and Garoto. At 16 years of age, Murilo was awarded a full scholarship to study in the US with distinguished American classical guitarist Carl Bernstein. Two years later he was the recipient of another scholarship to pursue further studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Sydney under the tutelage of Gregory Pikler. In 2007, Murilo successfully completed his B.Mus. performance degree with First Class Honours and immediately began his post-graduate studies upon receiving an Australian Postgraduate Award from the Australian Government.

The pieces in this collection are transcriptions of the solo movements from the ballet, Seven Wells. Each of the seven wells harbours one of the deadly sins ... Pride, Envy, Lust, Covetousness, Gluttony, Sloth, Anger. Although not immediately obvious from these solos, the depiction of the sins in the ballet is ambivalent; wells are sources of life (water) but they also occasionally conceal dangers. In turn, the deadly sins can be seen as perversions or an exaggeration of human behaviour, which when displayed in moderation are conducive to life. These exaggerations or expansions beyond what is acceptable are borne out in the music in two notable ways. Through the choice of representative acoustic instruments what is capable by a single human voice is effectively stretched out. In the original ballet the pitch range goes from the low notes of the contrabassoon to the piercingly high notes of the flute.
This approach is mirrored in the version for saxophones which utilises the baritone, tenor, alto and soprano instruments. The way the electronic instruments/programs were used to create the backing tracks likewise reinforces the idea of exaggerated behaviour. In this instance, there was a deliberate focus on the sounds that emerged at the extremes of the available note input ranges. These “peripheral” sounds were typically gross distortions of the more “indicative" timbres available from each program.
Seven Wells … Seven Sins was created for Sydney-based saxophonist, James Nightingale who is the alto saxophonist with Australia’s premier saxophone quartet, Continuum Sax. He has performed regularly as a casual saxophonist with Sydney’s orchestras since 1993, performing with the Sydney Symphony on their tour of Italy (2008) and recording Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances under the direction of Vladimir Ashkenazy (2007.) After graduating with a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music (performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, James completed his PhD at the University of Queensland (2011).
Sydney based composer Calogero Panvino came to music relatively late in life, as a university student studying economics and science. Soon after finishing his science degree, Calogero decided to follow his passion for music. He completed a Bachelor degree followed by a research Masters degree at the University of Sydney and he has been awarded numerous scholarships, grants and prizes for his work, including first prize in the 3MBS National Composer Award for his orchestral composition, Race Against Time. Calogero has an active interest in the natural world and is deeply concerned with the current state of the environment. This interest, his science background and a general appreciation of the arts are the main sources of inspiration for his music.

Paul’s uniquely expressive voice as a multi-instrumentalist and composer is informed by contemporary classical music, world music and jazz.
Paul was a member of the Australian Art Orchestra for 15 years and continues as a member of MARA! after 20 years, having frequently toured Europe, North America, Mexico and Asia. He composed and performed for the acclaimed theatre production Birth of the Cool for the 2003 Sydney Festival, with subsequent seasons in Edinburgh and Germany.
Since receiving his Master of Music in Composition from Sydney University, Paul has had works commissioned by Ars Musica Australis, The NOISE string quartet, Divergence Jazz Orchestra and Jenny Eriksson.

This performance is a vignette of a family moment in quarantine and self isolation. Using art as a way of coming together as a kind of group therapy during these anxious times. Like many people we have used jigsaw puzzles, craft and music as a way to reduce this anxiety and connect with each other. In the background, an emerging drawing made from puzzle pieces is of an audience that is not there due to the Covid virus.

By means of delays and FX triggered by the trumpet and then processed through the laptop, this work is an improvised exploration of sound, density, extended techniques and melody. Beginning with a range of extended techniques 'Phoenix Improvisation' culminates with an electronic accompaniment to provide momentum and release.

Ian Cleworth's kinaesthetic composition 'Waves' is a virtuosic two-tone slung-drum solo that is both hypnotic and mesmerising.
Ian co-founded Taikoz in 1997 and since he has received the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation (2016) for his contribution towards promoting friendship and goodwill between Australia and Japan.

Raised in a musical family, Marcello regularly performs with his father Ross Maio (accordion virtuoso) in 'From Caruso to Bocelli' and 'Viva La Fisarmonica Show'. He is a three-time winner of the National Accordion Championships (2001–2003) in both the pop/jazz and solo performance sections. Marcello is also a member of the highly acclaimed Sydney based ensembles The Tango Saloon and Monsieur Camembert.

Hip Hop artist Rhyhan Clapham graduated from the University of NSW with a Bachelor of Music and Indigenous Studies (Hons). He proudly identifies as a Filipino and Aboriginal musician and as a member of the Murrawarri Republic in Brewarrina (NSW). Rhyan was a recipient of the prestigious Peter Sculthorpe Fellowship for composition (2017). He has performed in many events including the BIG SOUND Festival, The Plot Festival, Yabun Festival, 4Elements Hip Hop Festival, UNSW corporate and academic functions, Koori Radio and at numerous NAIDOC celebrations across Australia. As a member of the Sydney based band Jackie Brown Jr. Rhyan has performed at the Wollombi Music Festival as well as the Rabbits Eat Lettuce and Psyfari Festival.
Rhyan is a prolific educator and currently, he conducts Hip Hop and drum workshops in community centres and schools throughout Sydney and rural NSW. He is also an academic tutor in Indigenous Studies at UNSW.

Dennis van Rooyen | Classical Guitar
Dennis holds a Master of Performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. In 2018 he was awarded second place at the Fine Music Sydney Young Virtuoso of the Year Competition as well as the Fairleigh Instrumental Scholarship and Instrumental Recital Championship prize at the Cowra Eisteddfod. Dennis is an upcoming soloist and he has performed with the Sydney Symphony Fellows, Sydney Youth Orchestra Philharmonic, the Hunter Wind Ensemble, and the Pathos String Quartet.

Rebecca’s recent performance highlights include Giorgetta in Giacomo Puccini's 'Il Tabarro', the title role in his 'Suor Angelica', and Paul Smith's chamber opera 'The Spider Maiden and the Runaway Plum Blossom'. Rebecca was a Young Artist with Pacific Opera and has sung with Opera Australia, Pacific Opera, Blush Opera, and Opera Projects Sydney. She received her Bachelor of Music (Performance) from Melbourne University, and her Advanced Diploma of Opera from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
General Manager and Associate Director of The Song Company Francis Greep has an international reputation for his work as a vocal coach, recitalist, chorus master, continuo player and conductor. He has worked extensively for Opera Australia and held the position of Head of Music at The West Australian Opera and the Houston Grand Opera. Francis gained his Master of Music and Artist Diploma from the University of Cincinnati and he is currently completing his PhD at the University of Melbourne.

Nick Train | Piper
By the end of the Crimean War (1853-1856) pipe bands were established in most of the Scottish regiments. Bagpipes were commonly used to lead the troops ‘over the top’ of the trenches and into combat. For the enemy, pipers were easy targets and in being unarmed many died during battle so the practice was abandoned after World War I (1914-18). Today, pipe bands in Australia continue the tradition of Scottish music and are an integral part of our community.
Nick Train is a pipe major of Sydney's Castle Hill RSL Pipe Band and he often performs at the annual Anzac Day parade as well as a wide range of social events including the Epping Scottish Society Social.

Love of music brings together local musicians and music teachers Tracey Levett and Steve Buiaroski. After years of performing original songs and the well-known jazz standards at many social functions with her band 'Swoon Jazz and Groove,' Tracey's current creative outlet is within the visual arts and she spends most days painting in her Sydney studio.
When not performing, Steve runs a local music school and enjoys teaching all levels of guitar playing from total beginners to advanced students.

Joshua Hill is a member of Synergy Percussion and performs regularly with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and Sydney Symphony. He has played and recorded with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Australian Baroque Brass, Halcyon, Ironwood, Eminence Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Canberra Symphony, Sydney Sinfonia, Symphony Australis, Royal Australian Navy Band, NSW Police band, Australian Airforce Air Command Band and the Disney Lion King Orchestra. Josh has also been a part of many recordings for soundtracks of feature film, anime and computer games.
