At just 20 years old, the youngest competitor of the renowned Sydney International Piano Competition (The Sydney) won through the various stages of the 2021 competition with expertise and skill beyond his years. Calvin Abdiel is the first Australian to reach the grand final in almost 20 years, astounding audiences tuning in virtually across the country and the world to watch this incredible young pianist in full competitive flight.
For his efforts, Calvin was awarded the George Frederick Boyle Third Prize. The international jury also awarded him the Nancy Weir Best Australian Pianist prize along with the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust prize of an overseas scholarship to further his musical career.
Calvin is no stranger to the world’s concert halls making his orchestral debut in 2017 with the St. Petersburg State Capella Symphony Orchestra. He has since performed across the world, including with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Swiss orchestra, Les Chambristes, all while being broadcast on ABC Classic FM and Fine Music Sydney.
