YL HOOI

I’m in awe of YL Hooi’s textural invocations. They feel like apparitions mutating constantly and offer a drowsily psychedelic, daydreaming appeal, but it’s Hooi’s voice which lends the work its unrivalled elegance.
— Angus Andrew
YL Hooi's compositions are occasionally rhythmic, and always immersive. Songs draw on atmospheric dub, post-punk, icy DIY, electronic minimalism and radiophonic pop experiments. YL Hooi’s debut album Untitled offers a uniquely transportive experience. The opening track 'Title' sets the tone and tempo, emerging out of undulating sine waves and cavernous, indistinct incantations. At the centre of the record is a cover of Love Joy's 'Stranger'. YL Hooi offers a vaporised version of the lovers rock lament, a hazy and haunting distillation of the original.
For this show YL Hooi will play with Tarquin Manek, who also appears on her Altered States Tapes/Efficient Space release Untitled, as well as on Kallista Kult, their project with Sam Karmel from Melbourne’s experimental mainstays CS + Kreme.
