∑gg√e|n
Hailing from Wynnum and self-described as “Subtropical Goth” this project that was initially launched as a musical collaboration between visual artists Archie Moore and David M. Thomas has developed into something much more devastating.
— Angus Andrew
Magnus o'Pus (Lyrics, Vocals, Horns) and David Ethix (Guitar) began ∑GG√E|N as a transgressive art project in Wynnum in 2011. Sometimes referred to as Subtropical Goth, ∑GG√E|N is becoming a progressive noise No Wave group with the inclusion of members Cal C. Um (Drums and Synthesiser) and Max Doubt (Bass and Guitar). Recent musical Performances have been in either forward thinking art museums such as The Murray Art Museum or lefty basements like Unite, Common House Fortitude Valley. ∑GG√E|N is always open to anything. The activity of making music for ∑GG√E|N is an important communal action. Through the joy of hanging out, laughing and making music this small music commune saves lives, not a lot of lives just one or two. In this strange and challenging time this activity seems even more precious.
Clare cooper
Spanning disciplines, places and communities, Clare’s work is rooted in the sociability of improvisation and its capacity to encourage compassion and radical acts of trust. Known for incorporating instruments such as the guzheng and tap shoes, this Essential Tremors performance is bound to be an imaginative dialogue with the acoustic space.
— Angus Andrew
Clare Cooper has been working with the arts community on Gadigal land since she co-founded the NOW now festival and experimental music series in Chippendale back in 2001. Her improvised performances fold in every skerrick, itch and scratch of the contexts within which they are created. She has presented hundreds of solo and collaborative projects spanning sound, improvisation, design, film, dance, theatre and futuring in 15 countries over the past two decades. As a musician, she's ferocious with strings and sticks, her sound inspired by synthesizers and broken boom boxes.
She’s an internationally published design and music scholar, climate activist, and community organiser currently running Frontyard Projects not-just-artist-run space in Marrickville.
This will be Clare’s first solo performance in Sydney since 2017.
